Only Ronnie Hoggins Days Until USF Football Season

#19 was USF’s best freshman last year and quickly nailed down a starting corner spot. How will he top it in 2016?

NCAA Football: Syracuse at South Florida Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports

#19 CB Ronnie Hoggins
Sophomore, 5’8", 175 lbs.

2015 Stats: Ronnie wasted no time making an impression in his true freshman year. He played in all 13 games, starting the last 10. He made a total of 26 tackles, 1.5 for loss, and intercepted passes against Florida A&M and UCF. Hoggins also led the team with six pass breakups. At the end of the year, Ronnie won the team’s Freshman of the Year award.

Position on Depth Chart: Hoggins is a starting cornerback on the post-spring depth chart, opposite Deatrick Nichols.

How He Came To USF: Ronnie played at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, about halfway between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. He had a monster senior year, intercepting 15 passes for the Knights and returning four for touchdowns as Monarch reached the second round of the state playoffs. He finished with a total of 28 high school interceptions and chose USF over a slew of other offers, including Cincinnati, Louisville, TCU, Temple, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Recruiting Rankings: All of the major recruiting services gave Hoggins three stars.

Projected Playing Time: Ronnie should keep his starting spot, and with an all-conference corner on the other side on the defense, teams may try to test him to avoid throwing towards Nichols. Based on his freshman performance and his superior ball-hawking skills, Hoggins will have plenty of chances to be the Trae Williams to Nichols’s Mike Jenkins.
